News

It happens too often to be mere chance. A major story not reported or only reported belatedly.

It has been reported this morning that an Iranian tanker carrying $60 million of oil is on fire and leaking oil off South Korea. It appears that the tanker's crew is missing following a collision with a Chinese vessel carrying grain from the US to China.

The report is on the front page of some internet news outlets. It's hardly worth a mention on others.

Over the past year I've been following the veracity of news outlets. Things are not improving, I can tell you that.

'What News?'  is also a kind of  'Fake News'.

Propaganda, Spin, Deception. Newspeak.   Call it what you like.

          It's an  old story.

Your post mirrors mine of yesterday.

    1. A large portion, in some countries 90% msm is in the hands of the few.

  2. What conspiracy? It's been reported by the Guardian, Telegraph and FT.

    1. The fact that Britain is 40th in the freedom of the press world rankings is a fact not a conspiracy. The fact that France is 39th in the list, a country where their president laid a wreath to mark the 3rd anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo murders, is a fact not a conspiracy. That the Guardians computers were smashed under government orders to destroy their contents is a fact not a conspiracy. But anyway, I'm not aware that I mentioned conspiracy in yesterday's post. I did mention the incident at the Guardian in the original post a few days ago. But not in conspiracy terms. Here in Austria the media used to be controlled by Goebell's propaganda ministry. Officially. Today Austria is 11th in the press freedom list. That's something to think about.

  3. Reuters were probably the first to cover the story, but still nothing on TV news.

    1. Reuters yes. The newspapers that Shawn Maeder mentions were late on the scene.

    2. Reuters is good. They were 3 hours ahead of some of the others.

    1. Yes that's absolutely true. And as Rachel mentioned elsewhere the time stamp is changed. The story being 'updated' when nothing is updated.

    1. Here in Vienna we have selection of foreign papers in our coffee houses. Papers like Frankfurter Allgemeine (banned in Egypt - maybe now unbanned I don't know), La Corriere de la Sera (italian paper with the news of a US listening post and photo of it in a residential area Vienna. This post since closed by Trump government). The International New York Times - I think it is called - some pages appear as inserts in the weekend edition of the Austrian state's bastion of 'independent' socialism Der Standard. And maybe Le Monde. In some coffee houses you might find papers from Russia, the Balkans, Turkey and so on. Austrians are well informed.

  6. News is selective everywhere. I guess reporting is by its very nature. Other people’s choices of what’s important/ relative/ matters are often bewildering. On another subject-belated birthday congratulations and also for your New Years race result. You’ll be creeping up those ratings now, eh?

    1. UK Publicca (see links) carries a piece worth reading on this subject.

I think my training is going quite well. I have lots of races for the first half of the year to think about - these are highlighted on my planner. Not that I'll do them all of course. Thanks for the birthday wishes! And good luck in the running year ahead.

    3. I’ve given up on Edinburgh. Too many road miles. Was hoping to do the Neolithic trail instead (Avebury to Stonehenge) at the end of May but don’t think it leaves me enough time now post knee problems. Will probably shelve marathon plans till 2019. It feels better that way, so I’ll trust the feeling. Glad all is going well with your training :o).

    4. Trust the feeling. I always do and have done. I always run within myself. Many of my co-conspirators have fallen by the wayside over the years. I just want to be one of those guys who runs a marathon aged 100. Always been my goal. I think it's a good ambition to have. But I'm not killing myself to do it. Yes, very wise to postpone the marathon. I can highly recommend to you the Half marathon option in the annual Wales Marathon Coed y Brenin Race. It's in Snowdonia National Park. Accommodation aplenty nearby in Dolgellau, Porthmadog or Barmouth.

    1. Grazie Maria. All runners, at least here, have birthdays on 1st January - just like racehorses! As my birthday is this year I am now officially 70 so far as the running scene is concerned. I think it's the same in Italy. I've never checked. As a matter of interest: My Italian friend is running in Umbria at the weekend, it's called the race of the cuckoo! Corsa del cuculo I think. Or something like that.

  8. __ If anyone was born 75 years ago today, their then birthday would be, 1-9-43, and that, was in the year of 1943. Sometimes things align. Smiles_!

    1. If the person lived in Europe those numbers would be 9-1-43 (the 'logical sequence' being D-M-Y)
