It's three cheers for Archie Harrison!
The bookies must've cleaned up.
When I heard the names a short time ago I immediately thought of Archie Andrews and Harrison Birtwistle.
Can't believe I used to listen to a ventriloquist on the radio! I really enjoyed those shows.
Image of Archie Andrews with ventriloquist Peter Brough (by unknown) available under Fair Use.
Is that lad in the striped blazer the Brexit Party leader?
ReplyDeleteI have heard of someone having a face for radio but never a wireless ("Put wireless on") ventriloquist puppet: "A gottle of gear".
Hi Dave, I remember waiting patiently cross legged on a mat on the lino for the valves in the wireless to warm up and glow and Listen With Mother to come on. When the lady said: Are you sitting comfortably? I'd say: Yes. Then she'd say: Then I'll begin. And on she'd go with her story.
DeleteInteresting observation you make. There is a passing resemblance to Nigel I think.
They use to call radio: the theatre of the mind. I remember Watch With Mother on the electric fish tank or television.
ReplyDeleteOliver Postgate is another one of my heroes too. Remember Ivor the engine and the Clangers?
I don't remember Oliver Postgate or Ivor the Engine. What I do remember off the goggle box is Bill and Ben the Flower Pot Men (and Little Weed), and Muffin the Mule. You could even see the strings I think.
DeleteThe Clangers were more nineteen seventies programmes. They updated The Flower Pot Men recently. See they still use terracotta plant pots? Great tv nostalgia Gwil.
ReplyDeleteThe Clangers were definitely after my time.
DeleteI loved Oliver Postgate for Noggin the Nog.
ReplyDeleteThe only Oliver I remember is Mr Hardy. Sad to say I don't even know Noggin the Nog.
DeleteMy friend had a dog called Noggin. Oliver Postgate was a genius.
DeleteSome chap on BBC said Archie is a popular dog name. He should be sent to the tower!
DeleteOver the next few weeks there will no doubt be thousands of baby boys called Archie.
ReplyDeleteMy sister in law was going to call her new dog Archie, but she changed her mind and named him Kail.
DeleteWe used to listen to him too. Sunday lunch time, I think. It never occured to me that it was strange; he being wooden!
ReplyDelete__ I'm sure this has been -overused-, but smiles.
