Rising from the dead

There are many instances of people coming back from the dead. One doesn't have to look far for evidence of this phenomena.

There are books, videos, and accounts in abundance on the Internet.

The other day, for example, I came across a video of a lecture by a hospital doctor who had witnessed the clinical deaths of thousands of people and had concluded that human consciousness continued when there were no longer signs of life to be found - no breathing, no pulse, no brain activity.

The doctor spoke of a patient who had been dead for over two hours before returning to life to report on an out of body experience.

Statistically 98% of such reports were very similar and often spoke of pleasant experiences in a place filled with light and with an atmosphere of love.

In less than 2% of cases there were reports of people finding themselves temporarily in the world Hieronymous Bosch or in a 'place' of dark shadows before passing after a short time to the pleasant 'place'.

Was there some reason to be found for the Hieronymous Bosch experience in the person's life history? The doctor thought not.

One thing people had in common after their experience was that they no longer feared death.

Millions of similar cases are to be found all over the world in all cultures and societies. And it makes no difference whether a person is religious or not.

A person of my acquaintance left instructions that her body was to remain undisturbed for 24 hours after her death and nobody was to enter the room.

It's possible that death is not final.

The evidence points that way.

  1. Presumably if the patients 'came back to life', it meant that they weren't really dead. I'm very sceptical about all the 'invisibles', and high on my list are heaven and hell.

    1. The patients are dead in the sense that there are no vital signs. There is no brain activity. All the lines are flat. They are dead as far as the medical profession is concerned. But even then we are in a small way in life, for our hair and nails continue to grow for a while. Maybe we are not really dead until rigormortis has come and gone and our hair and nails have stopped growing and we begin to rot? In the death museum in Vienna amongst the exhibits there is an old coffin fitted with a bell which the dead person could ring to alert any passer by if he woke up and discovered he'd been buried by mistake,

  2. In Italy for organ donation, in case of death after cardiac arrest, the patient's electrocardiogram mist be flat for at least 20 minutes against the few minutes expected for example in the United States. A longer time that gives the guarantee that the donor is actually dead.

  3. Death isn't a single moment and during that time hallucinations may occur. It is during this short window of time that it is still possible to bring a person back to life in some circumstances, who had been on the brink of death.

As I said the other day, as for Jesus on the cross, I do not believe that he died and was still alive when taken to the tomb, albeit in appearance dead. He got up in the morning and walked. He did not rise from the dead though.

  4. Morning Rachel, in my reply to Cro I mentioned the coffin with a bell in it. In times gone by it was not uncommon for live people to be buried presumed dead. It must have happened millions of times. Jesus was not buried under the earth but was wrapped in a cloth and placed above ground in a rich man's a tomb. The 'hallucinations' as one passes along the path of death are 98% of the same nature. They are not like dreams where everybody has different and unrelated ones. They have the quality of changing peoples lives in a 'spiritual' way. Those who come back without the 'hallucinations' are not changed. They carry on as before.

  5. Sorry Gwil. An interesting story but I just can't accept any of it. Death to me is final.

    1. Thanks Pat, there are many points of view. My brother holds the same as yourself. For myself, I tend towards Shakespeare: We are such stuff as dreams are made on.

  6. I can't believe that there is only this life Gwil. Besides you and me have seen ghosts. So there's got to be more than just this. Good win for Giggsy and the Welsh lads yesterday.

    1. There is an energy field and we are part of it. If half the people one speaks to have seen a ghost, that'd be 3 billion people (minimum). It's not a mystery why Dylan Thomas put on that poltergeist act for me in his Boathouse bedroom. Great result for the lads and the new manager. And a hat trick from Gareth :) the icing on the cake. Uruguay in the final will be a tougher nut to crack.

  7. Although I am willing to believe that there is something beyond this life, I think there are alternative explanations for the out of body experience (I'd need to do some research to find out what they are though...)

    1. When my mum was about young girl she was very ill, and one day she was aware that she floating in the air and looking down on her own body. She saw her mother in tears at the bedside, the doctor had told her to expect the worst. My mother felt so sorry for causing her mother such distress that she decided to return to her earthly body, as she put it. We are spiritual creatures and our body is our physical manifestation, she said. Who knows? Maybe we are just brains in jars and imagining everything.

  8. Tom had an out of body experience just once after a joint, he saw himself sitting on the sofa, needless to say it put him off for good and he's never touched one since. lol

Or even what he was doing up there in the first place.
