The Lake in Winter

The Neusiedlersee which is situated on the Austria-Hungary border is a large lake much frequented by day trippers and tourists during the spring, summer and autumn months.

Camping is very popular. There are not that many hotels but there is plenty of B & B accommodation on offer.

The area is beloved by the thousands of cyclists who like to cycle round the lake. There are cycle ferries crossing the lake at different points for those who do not want to pedal all the way round.

A small red and white flag and the words Zimmer Frei near the front door of a house signals that a room is available.  If the sign says Belegt it means 'No Vacancies'.

Birds are now overwintering on the lake.

Here are some photographs from yesterday.

The frog is very big!  But the geese are bigger!

Storks will arrive from Africa in March and April.   One year a stork miraculously made the journey with a spear stuck in its side.

    1. It's a wine growing area and there are wine taverns at frequent intervals.
But there are pubs too of course. Gösser is a good Austrian beer. Or if you like a light beer there's Puntigamer. It's good with food or on its own. Nice and refreshing. Puntigamer own the Styrian football team Sturm Graz. There were some tax issues but I think that's all in the past now.

    2. Sounds wonderful. One of the excellent Czech beers we drank in Bratislava was called Bernard and only one Euro for a large glass. We found a wonderful hostelry next to the sex supermarket. You couldn't make it up and no I didn't go in.

    3. 'Violence Mars English victory'. You have to be careful in Bratislava. There were two England football supporters shot by 'doormen' at some kind of 'night club'. It was in 2002.

    1. I think the frog belongs to some workmen Pat. It was in the garden of a two-storey wooden hotel they are building on the lakeside in Rust. They've nearly finished the job by the look of it. I reckon he's a mascot. Hope they don't forget him when they go.

    1. On the far side of the lake the Seewinkel National Park is a WWF area and popular with birdwatchers. It's been quite mild this winter, up to now!

    1. Greylag geese I think they are. Graugans in German anyway.

They eat geese in the East of Austria on special days. But I think they must be a special kind they breed for eating in Hungary.
