An area the size of Belgium
Euronews is reporting that the Russian army is fighting Siberian wildfires covering an area nearly the size of Belgium.
I must apologize for my ignorance. I've no idea how 'big' or 'small' the size of Belgium is.
Is it bigger than the Isle of Wight?
Much bigger.
According to my device tiny Belgium is, in UK terms, 50% bigger than Wales.
That's a lot of smoke.

It is 10 times bigger than the Isle of Wight and 1.5 times bigger than Wales.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachel. I just looked. It's a lot of smoke. The reason I mentioned it is that the same news outlet spoke the other day about something being half the size of the area of Berlin and I looked up how many football pitches it was to get a perspective. I've been to Berlin but I couldn't remember the size of the place.
DeleteI note that it is customary to let the fires burn out naturally as lives are not at risk but pressure has been put on Putin and he has now declared a national emergency. It will only be a matter of days before he is blamed for Global Warming! Green Peace have already put their oar in.
DeleteVladimir Putin is clearly the world's scapegoat. He gets blamed for almost everything.
DeleteSounds like my Geography these days - and to think I took it for A level more years ago than I care to count.
ReplyDeleteOur geography teacher was a football referee at weekends. He'd regale us with tales of refereeing at Manchester United and so on. So we soon knew where the First Division football grounds were in the 1960s if we didn't know already.
