Venice (Lost and Found)

You never know what you might find when you go through an accumulation of paper in order to bring some order into your life. It's almost a haphazard  ritual with me. There's no fixed pattern. It's something I do on impulse.

One thing I rediscovered was this postcard sized impression of a canal corner in Venice which I painted nearly 20 years ago. I wonder where it's been all this time.

Another mysterious find is an undated attempt at humour. Ten years old at least; a poem about an Irish writer titled Vanity Poet Seeks Sympathy.

Could be 'something for the morrow' northsider Dave!

  1. There was once a council meeting somewhere up north. One councillor rose to his feet and said:

"We should get one of them Gondola's and make this town Venice of the north."

    Another councillor said:

"Hi lad. Why don't we get two and breed them?"

    Great painting Gwil!

    1. Sounds like someplace on t'road to Wigan pier or maybe Nelson.

Lord Byron used to swim in the Grand Canal. Legend has it he once swam from Venice Lido to Rialto Bridge for bet. Not satisfied with the winning the bet he dried off and made two women happy. Sad that he died in Greece when he did. And even sadder that the English establishment gave him the cold shoulder. It was 145 years before there was a memorial in poets corner.

Regarding my daubing I think you've just devalued the word 'great'.

Thanks for the 'great joke' Dave.

    2. Wish I could paint. I can decorate a room. Anaglypta or woodchip. Only five pounds a roll?

Seriously. If God gives you a gift you should use it. Did you ever think anymore of putting on an exhibition of your art?

  2. I like the painting too Gwil. My first husband was a painter and the two words he hated most when applied to one of his paintings were 'like' and 'nice', But seriously I think you capture some of the atmosphere of my favourite place in the world.

    1. The place where we used to stay has closed. I think it'll be a long time before we go again. It feels like trying to get into a football match just walking along there sometimes. There are moves to charge the day trippers to try and alleviate the problem. I think €10 has been mentioned.

  3. I am smiling at a load of paper shifted for twenty years. What size is the paper that the painting has been secluded for twenty years.

    1. The more I throw away the more I seem to accumulate. I don't know how I do it. It's only a small painting perhaps my second or third visit sitting in the sunshine somewhere with a glass of wine nearby no doubt.

  4. If I turn it on its side from side to side and swivel it I see faces.
