Bobby's Useful Bag

Once upon a time, as they say,  I was shopping in Bobby's British Shop.

Standing at the till in front of the shopkeeper I realized that my Co-op Stores 'Plastic Bags are Rubbish' carrier wasn't with me.

Home from Bobby's, I unpacked the colourful 'Union Jack + Stars and Stripes' bag.

Impressed by the artwork and its tough and durable qualities I decided I'd use it to carry my cabbages  carrots and cauliflowers home from the Saturday market.

From today it has a third life.

If you could look inside the bag today you would find some pairs of muddy running shoes. This is where they live when they are not on my feet.

I shall take them out of the bag from time to time and bang their soles and heels together. The dried mud will fall off.

Some people wash their running shoes.

I know one person who puts his shoes in a pillow case and slings them in the washing machine. I don't do that and I don't recommend doing it either.

When our lie-a-bed spring finally arrives I shall wash my shoes by running through puddles.

The forecasters say a change in the weather is due soon.

I have decided to believe them. It's been snowing all morning.

The barometer is falling. The mercury is rising.

Bobby's 'Union Jack + Stars and Stripes' bag is a sturdy beast.

I'd be surprised if it didn't outlast me.  Hopefully it will have several more lives in the years and decades to come.

  May the future go well.

God Save the Queen.

  1. God Save the Queen, hear hear. If I had running shoes I would dry them by the stove and then knock them together so the mud falls off.

    1. :-). If I put them by the stove to dry I'd get a thumbs down. Putting them where they are gets me some brownie points.

    1. It has the American flag on the other side. The Welsh flag with its red dragon would've been my choice for the other side as Wales is not represented in the Union Jack.

  3. I like the Union Jack Flag. I think it is one of the best "designed" flags. I'm not English but I love the Queen. Lunga vita alla Regina!

    1. I'm interested that you say that. Most national flags are uninteresting artistically speaking. The Austrian flag looks resembles a no entry sign: a white horizontal stripe on a red background. I wouldn't like to have a national flag which is a third black, like Belgium or Germany, I'd soon get depressed looking at this national blackness every day. It feels like somebody just died.

  4. Why is Wales not represented on the Union Jack? My great grandmother came from Wrexham.

    1. Wales has never officially joined the UK as far as I'm aware. It is still referred to as a principality. The last prince of Wales was Owen Glyndower. He was the only one who refused to go to the signing of the peace treaty with the English because he suspected it was a trap. The other princes disbelieved him and went and we're all duly murdered. The Welsh flag which was adopted when Wales was finally given the right to have its own flag in the 1950s I think is the flag of the Cadwalladers, a noble family from Wales whom I believe provided the Welsh with high ranking religious personages.

    1. This is the one. It is here because I couldn't get a photo of the shop front to show Dave (above) so he has to make do with a bag of shoes for now :-)
